Well folks, because of the reversal in our itinerary, Shanghai will be our first stop. Over the next few days, I will be highlighting some of our stops in this magnificent city. In the meantime, enjoy the video below showcasing "The Bund," Shanghai's former financial heart.

to top off my china reading i am going to get "New Shanghai" and "The Last Days of Old Beijing" and "Prisoner of the State, the memoirs of Zhang Ziyang" then i will be ready. I also watched "Still Life" the other night, the shots were great, they looked like chinese paintings with modern buildings on top of the foggy hills. Chinese movies are well... very silent. This one was very silent, and it was not as though-provoking as Beijing Bicycle. It is about a man who goes back to Feichuan which is going to be flooded with the continuation of the construction of the Three Gorges Dam in order to find his wife and daughter. It touches on divorce, migration, government destroying buildings, and has a feeling of loss. My favorite scene was where the demolition men were talking about their home provinces. They used money to show their home. "Look see I am from Shaanxi, this is what my province looks like". It is mellow.
